NATIONAL SUMMARY

Tropical Rainstorm Fay continued to cause flooding problems in
portions of North Carolina Wednesday into early Thursday, as well as
incidents of flash flooding in parts of Virginia. However, most areas
Wednesday into Thursday experienced beneficial rain from the system
as far north as Ohio, western New York, western Pennsylvania and
Maryland. Meanwhile, a cold front pushing slowly through the Upper
Midwest brought locally heavy rainfall to portions of Minnesota,
Wisconsin and Iowa. A few locations received over 2 inches of rain
since early Wednesday. Moisture from Mexico and the remains of
Tropical Rainstorm Julio brought isolated downpours to parts of
Arizona and New Mexico, where a few incidents of flash flooding have
occurred over the past couple of days. Heat began to build over
interior California Wednesday and Thursday with temperatures
surpassing the 100-degree mark as close to the coast as Paso Robles
and Ukiah. After a relatively cool day Wednesday in the Northwest and
northern Rockies, temperatures were on the rebound Thursday
afternoon. In addition, 90-degree heat was commonplace along much of
the Gulf of Mexico coast under sunshine associated with a zone of
high pressure. In contrast, temperatures stopped in the 70s over much
of the Northeast, even in areas with abundant sunshine Wednesday and
Thursday. Even cooler air invaded the northern Plains with highs in
some areas in the 60s.

SPECIAL WEATHER

A Busy Time Ahead for the Tropical Atlantic Ocean
As of Thursday afternoon, there were two named systems in the
Tropical Atlantic Basin: Gustav and Hanna. Both systems pose a threat
in days ahead for United States interests. Gustav is likely to
markedly intensify and become a serious concern for residents along
the Gulf of Mexico, while Hanna is likely to strengthen to a
hurricane and become a problem for the Bahamas and perhaps the east
coast of Florida and the southeastern U.S. coast in general. There
are also several other systems being monitored for better
organization in the Atlantic Basin in coming days. The record for
simultaneous named systems in the Atlantic is four, set in 1996, and
we could be faced with that very scenario next week.
