Issue One: Ben Roethlisberger

Why take risks?

I heartily agree with Ron Cook's March 7 column ("Roethlisberger Guilty of Poor Judgment"). Big Ben takes too many chances with his reputation, guilty or not of the latest allegations.

He had no business being out trying to pick up college girls at 2 in the morning. What happened to the young man who used to write "PFJ" (Play for Jesus) on the bottoms of his shoes? Does he ever stop to consider how his actions affect all the children who look up to him?

Even some students at Miami University of Ohio will be embarrassed by his behavior, whether or not sexual assault charges are brought against him.

As my husband keeps saying, Ben Roethlisberger needs some better friends to hang out with.

Ease up on Ben

I resent Ron Cook's column last Sunday about Ben Roethlisberger ("Roethlisberger Guilty of Poor Judgment," March 7). Sure, Ben could spend his evenings watching TV, but why should he? Star or no, he has the right to be with his friends, where or when he wants.

I think some women are just after his money. One does not have to be Sherlock Holmes to figure that out.

Guilty of hubris

I am a mother of three young children who are Steelers fans. My kids follow the players, root for the team and wear their gear on "color days" at their schools. They admire, imitate and aspire to be like the Steelers. They are not alone in this city.

My husband and I work hard every day to contribute to our local community. We try to teach our kids about the pitfalls of drugs and alcohol, the importance of eating right and exercising and to respect themselves and their bodies. We think members of the Steelers family understand their role as leaders in this city and have embraced opportunities to help and positively influence the next generation of Pittsburghers.

Ben Roethlisberger is a young man who has had tremendous success. He has an opportunity not just to win Super Bowls but also to help lead and influence a generation of children. Whether prior allegations are true or false, I am dumbfounded as to why Mr. Roethlisberger was in a bar in the early morning hours on a weekday partying with underaged students. At best he is guilty of hubris, disrespect to our city and ingratitude to the good fortune life has brought him.
