House fire Beltzhoover starts during home repairs
Saturday, March 13, 2010

Firefighters were summoned to a four-alarm house fire in Beltzhoover this morning.

The fire, which broke out around 10 a.m., was in the 800 block of Gearing Avenue. There were no injuries although one person was taken to a hospital as a precaution, said assisant fire chief Jim Crawford.

The house was extensively damaged, but firefighters were able to contain the fire so that there was less damage to the homes on either side. Both of those homes appeared to have damage to the exterior walls near the site of the blaze.

Mr. Crawford said the occupant in the home and another indivdiual with some plumbing skills were soldering pipe on a bathroom in the house."It got into the wall," he said.

It spread from there.

Mr. Crawford said there was a total of five people from the three houses that got out.

When firefighters arrived, Mr. Crawford said, flames were coming from both sides of the house.

Mr. Crawford said preliminary investigation suggests the fire was accidental, but investigators were called to the scene.
