If you'd like a look into the painstaking labor required to create the grand works in "Gods, Love, and War: Tapestries and Prints From the Collection" at Carnegie Museum of Art, visit the exhibition between 1 and 3 p.m. when artist Constance Merriman will be at her loom reproducing a portion of one of the historic weavings. Ms. Merriman will also weave from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 1 to 3 p.m. next Sunday. Free this Thursday and with museum admission Sundays (412-622-3131 or www.cmoa.org).

Robert Ruck will speak at 1:30 p.m. on "Reinventing America: The New Deal" at The Frick Art Museum, 7227 Reynolds St., Point Breeze. Dr. Ruck, senior lecturer, history, University of Pittsburgh, will focus on how and why the country changed during the 1930s. To complement the exhibition "1934: A New Deal for Artists" at The Frick Art & Historical Center, a Coffee and Culture program, "Ketchup Sandwiches and Saving String," will be held in the Frick's Lexington Education Center at 10 a.m. Laura Beattie, assistant curator of education, will talk, over coffee, about the ways people found to cope with the dire economic situation brought on by the Depression. STARTING THURSDAY

The River City Brass Band's spring series continues this week with four shows remaining in its "Appalachian Spring" repertoire.

Under guest conductor James Gourlay, a renowned tuba soloist from Scotland, the band will present selections from Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story," John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes," John Williams' "Canterbury Chorale" from the "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" film and other pieces.

Malian guitar virtuoso/singer Habib Koite performs at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture, 980 Liberty Ave., Downtown, at 8 p.m. Transcend cultural boundaries with Mr. Koite, who is hailed for his magnetism and musical mastery. He integrates the sounds of the Western world, such as jazz and blues, with flamenco, samba and the diverse regional styles of his native Mali.
