A Garfield man today was ordered held for trial nine years after a fatal shooting outside a Homewood after-hours club that has since been closed as a nuisance.
Sean Greene, 39, already was in prison awaiting trial in an unrelated case when a witness to the 2000 shooting incident learned of his incarceration.
That 38-year-old witness testified at a preliminary hearing this morning that he suspected trouble when he saw the butt of a revolver hanging from the pocket of the suspect, who approached him outside the Traveler's Club in Homewood at around 11:45 p.m. July 13, 2000.
The witness and the suspect had known each other for more than a decade. Mr. Greene asked the witness whether the targeted victims, Timothy Raines, 23, who was killed that night, and Kenya Simpson, 24, were inside the club.
The witness said he did not know who was in the club at the time. But, he said, about four hours later he advised his friends that there was going to be trouble and that they all should leave.
Outside, the witness sat in his vehicle for about 30 minutes near the club entrance. Again he said he was approached by Mr. Greene, who still was outside, so he waited, "just being nosey," the witness testified.
While Mr. Raines and Mr. Simpson said goodbyes in the parking lot, Mr. Greene approached from behind them and began firing from his pistol, he said.
Mr. Simpson, wounded by a bullet to the shoulder, managed to run back into the club. Mr. Raines was found dead in the parking lot.
The witness testified that he saw Mr. Greene fire the first shot. After that, he said he slumped in his car until the shooting stopped.
A moment after the fatal shooting, he said, a woman and two bouncers emerged from the club. The woman pulled a pistol and began firing at Mr. Greene as he ran from the area, the witness said.
Under cross-examination by defense attorney Kenneth Haber, the witness said he kept quiet for 8 1/2 years out of fear. After he learned Mr. Greene was in prison, he sent his own lawyer in January to tell police what he knew.
Mr. Greene, who already is serving time at the State Correctional Institution at Houtzdale, Clearfield County, was arrested in May.
District Judge Robert Dzvonick ordered Mr. Greene held for trial on charges of homicide and two counts of weapons violations.
