Friday, July 10, 2009

What: The Garrett Lakes Arts Festival summer concert series, 7:30 p.m. July 17 and 18.

Where: The Lodge at Wisp Resort in McHenry, Md.

How far: Two hours from Pittsburgh.

How much: $35 adults, $5 students, free for children 5 and under; www.artsandentertainment.org or 1-301-387-3082.

What to do: You probably know western Maryland's Deep Creek Lake area as a fun place to boat, swim or play golf during summer vacation. Next weekend, it will also be a fabulous place to listen to music, when the festival hosts two concerts by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

On July 17, Lawrence Loh conducts a pops concert featuring music from movie classics, including John Williams and Henry Mancini. July 18 brings more classical fare, with conductor Andres Cardenes leading the PSO through Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," Beethoven's "Consecration of the House Overture," and Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 5 "Reformation."

n Fun factor: 8 if you're looking to round out a day of play with a night of culture; 10 if you're a traveling fan of the PSO who couldn't make its spring tour through China.
