DEP issues air quality alert
Wednesday, September 03, 2008

The state Department of Environmental Protection has declared today an air quality action day in the Pittsburgh region.

The air quality forecast predicts unhealthy pollution levels in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

Young children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems, such as asthma, emphysema and bronchitis, are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit outdoor activities.

Residents and businesses are encouraged to voluntarily limit certain pollution-producing activities by taking the following steps:

• Ride the bus or carpool to work;

• Avoid burning leaves, trash and other materials;

• Wash dishes and clothes with full loads; and

• Save energy -- do not overcool your home.

Abundant sunshine and highs in the upper 80s are expected today. Check out the latest conditions and forecast.
