UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State produced a number of firsts in yesterday's season opener.
Starting tailback Evan Royster ran for three touchdowns in his first start.
Backup Stephfon Green had two scores in his first regular-season appearance.
And starting quarterback Daryll Clark threw the first touchdown pass of his college career.
"Everything went pretty well in my first start," Clark said. "It was exciting. I wanted everything to go right. We got a lot of plays and executed a lot. I don't think I got touched all day."
In all, No. 22 Penn State had seven rushing touchdowns, 334 yards on the ground and averaged 7.8 yards per carry en route to demolishing Division I-AA Coastal Carolina, 66-10, at Beaver Stadium.
The 66 points were the most in a season-opener for the Lions since 1926, when they pasted Susquehanna, 82-0.
"Welcome to Big Ten football," Coastal Carolina coach David Bennett said. "Woo!"
The victory was the 373rd of Penn State coach Joe Paterno's career, tying him with Florida State's Bobby Bowden for the most in Division I-A history. Bowden's Seminoles don't open until Saturday.
"I haven't even thought about it, and I'm not going to," Paterno said. "I can only say it so many times. It's not a big deal to me."
Royster, a redshirt sophomore who scored five touchdowns in a backup role last year, accounted for scores on the first two offensive series of the opening quarter. He scored on runs of 7 and 2 yards, and on a 10-yarder early in the third quarter.
He finished with 64 yards on eight carries.
Green, a redshirt freshman, was Penn State's leading rusher with 89 yards on 10 attempts. He scored on two 7-yard runs. Third-string tailback Brent Carter managed 73 yards on nine carries.
"Brent and Royster did all the hard work and I just kind of got in there at the end," Green said. "It was fun. I was just trying to make some plays, show what I could do."
Redshirt freshman Chaz Powell scored on a 55-yard run in the third quarter and true freshman Brandon Beachum capped the onslaught with a score on a 1-yard run in the fourth.
The Lions finished with 594 yards of offense, their most since netting 661 against Rutgers in 1995. And their 334 rushing yards were the most since piling up 389 against Youngstown State in 2006.
Coastal Carolina, which was paid between $400,000 and $450,000 for its first game against a Division I opponent, pulled to within 14-7 in the second quarter on Zach MacDowell's 33-yard touchdown pass to Trent Usher.
But Derrick Williams returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards, putting Penn State back on top, 21-7.
"It is unbelievable how many guys can do special things," Williams said. "I am just so excited to see what the season has for us. There are definitely a lot of guys that can create plays."
Shortly after Williams' heroics, Clark tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jordan Norwood to stretch the advantage to 28-7.
Clark, a senior who had seen limited action in 15 career games before yesterday, completed 11 of 14 passes for 146 yards. And backup Pat Devlin was 5 of 8 for 83 yards. The redshirt sophomore entered the game at 7:31 of the second quarter. He promptly found Norwood down the left sideline for a 40-yard completion. It was the first completion of Devlin's Penn State career. Green's first career touchdown run was the payoff.
"My goal was to get three scores and I got two," he said.
It was that kind of day.
