CMU Prof undergoing alcohol treatment
Friday, August 29, 2008

A Carnegie Mellon University professor charged with drunken driving three times in eight days didn't show up for a bond revocation hearing today because he enrolled himself earlier this week in an alcohol rehab center in Virginia, where his lawyer said he will be treated for 28 days before returning to Pittsburgh.

The district attorney's office tried to serve Jeffrey Hunker, 51, with a subpoena at his Squirrel Hill house this morning, but that was too late for him to receive it because he'd flown to a treatment center in Salem, Va., on Wednesday.

The DA had asked Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Anthony Mariani to revoke Mr. Hunker's bond from a drunken-driving arrest on Aug. 17, but the judge declined, saying the medical treatment was enough to ensure public safety. Mr. Hunker was arrested the following day and again on Sunday.

"He seems to be addressing the issue you're worried about," the judge told a prosecutor this morning after castigating the office for serving Mr. Hunker notice of the hearing an hour-and-a-half before it was to start.

The judge modified the conditions of Mr. Hunker's release, ordering him not to drive, not to drink and to undergo random urine tests administered by pre-trial services when he arrives back in town after the treatment in Virginia.

Mr. Hunker's lawyer said he will ask that a preliminary hearing in city court set for Sept. 9 be postponed until Mr. Hunker returns.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
