Friday, August 29, 2008

A motorist from Fayette County was charged early yesterday with striking a police officer, his cruiser and another vehicle in Washington County, state police in Belle Vernon said.

California Borough police had to chase the driver, Nicey M. McMillen of Uniontown, before the car was pulled over about a block away from the incident.

Officers had been at the scene of a disturbance at 1:22 a.m. on Third Street in California when the vehicle approached.

Officer Mark Costello had been standing outside his police cruiser and Officer John Hackinson was seated inside when the suspect's car drove past.

The mirror of the passing car struck Officer Costello in the back, then struck the open door of the police vehicle.

The driver continued on with the vehicle striking another parked car.

Officers pursued the driver and pulled over the car at Liberty and Second streets.

Officer Costello was not injured. Officer Hackinson drove himself to a hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

His condition was not available yesterday.

State police are investigating.
