The Good, the Bad and the Beautiful
New stars to dance with; paying for Miley's party; Connery's Scottish roots
Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Are you beginning to get the "type" who comes out for "Dancing With the Stars"? The soap diva, the Oscar winner, the singer, the athletes, the member of 'N Sync ...

Susan Lucci, Cloris Leachman, Toni Braxton, Warren Sapp, two U.S. Olympians and Lance Bass (who follows in the dance steps of fellow 'N Syncer Joey Fatone) are among 13 celebs who will hit the floor on ABC's new season of "Dancing With the Stars," premiering Sept. 22.

The other contestants are Kim Kardashian, Ted McGinley, Brooke Burke and Olympic athletes Misty May-Treanor, who won her second gold medal for beach volleyball at this year's summer games in Beijing, and Maurice Greene, who won two gold medals in track at the 2000 games in Sydney.

Rounding out the cast are chef Rocco DiSpirito, Cody Linley of "Hannah Montana" and comedian Jeffrey Ross.

The names were announced yesterday on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Kardashian, who co-stars with her family on the E! reality series "Keeping up With the Kardashians," checked into a New York City hospital Sunday after cutting her foot on a glass table in her hotel room.

"I will be able to dance. I went to the hospital. I'll be fine," she said in a phone call to "GMA."

Now you know somebody needs to be slapped over this one.

Apparently Miley Cyrus, who makes slightly less money than only God, is selling invitations to her 16th birthday party for $250 a pop.

Can you believe that!

Girlfriend earned $18.2 million last year. She and her bosses at Disney ought to be picking up the tab.

Miley's sweet 16 party is scheduled for Disneyland in October, according to a report by "Entertainment Tonight."

The 5,000 tickets reserved for fans go on sale 9 a.m. Saturday.

Who's got money for this kind of foolishness? Aren't people losing their homes?

Oh, we guess that since the price of gas has gone down a little bit, Disney must think folks are flush now.

The name's Connery, not Bond.

Although Sean Connery will forever be associated with the James Bond film franchise, he's also Sean Connery the proud Scot, and this week he returned to his hometown of Edinburgh to launch his autobiography.

"Being a Scot" looks at Connery's early life as a milkman in Edinburgh's Fountainbridge neighborhood, The Associated Press said, then delves into a wide-ranging look at Scottish culture, including the works of poet Robert Burns, novelist Sir Walter Scott and Mary, Queen of Scots.

"It will illuminate what Fountainbridge's most famous former milkman thinks of many aspects of Scottish culture and life, including sport, architecture and, of course, the gothic tendency in Scots literature," said Edinburgh International Book Festival director Catherine Lockerbie.

Connery is a vocal supporter of the pro-independence Scottish National Party. He lives in the Bahamas and has said he will not reside in Scotland until it gains independence from the United Kingdom.

The unveiling of "Being a Scot," written with Murray Grigor, coincides with Connery's 78th birthday. Among the 800 authors appearing at the festival are Salman Rushdie, Louis de Bernieres and Margaret Atwood.

Singer James Otto, who has a No. 1 hit with "I Just Got Started Loving You" (love this title) is headed this way. He's coming to the Pepsi-Cola Roadhouse in Burgettstown on Sept. 5.

"I cannot wait to get to Pittsburgh to perform," he told the GBB via e-mail. "What a rockin' bunch of fans you guys have out there. This will be the first time since my album release to tour through the Pittsburgh area, and I can't wait."

You know his debut album, "Sunset Man," which was co-produced by Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts and John Rich of Big & Rich, debuted at No. 3 on the Top 100 all-genre Billboard Chart and remained in the top five on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart for six weeks.

This country brother is the real deal.

"Two and a Half Men" star Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller are "thrilled" to be expecting a baby, "Extra" reports. Sheen has two daughters with his ex Denise Richards and another with former girlfriend Paula Profit. Through his rep, Sheen adds, "[Brooke is] the best stepmom Sam, Lola and Cassandra could ever hope for. Seeing her love and affection with those three, I know she'll be an amazing mom. Unless I bat 100 percent, perhaps a boy awaits us."

Brendan Walsh, of Carnegie and a student at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, is the winner of Arby's video contest and will star in an Arby's commercial that will be released next year. Walsh also will receive a year's worth of free food from Arby's. The contest was a search to find a fan of the fast-food chain who could demonstrate on film how they are saving the world from ordinary fast food. Walsh's video (posted at www.arbys.com; click on More Stuff) shows him running to great lengths (literally) to rescue a man from eating an ordinary, bland hamburger.

"My friends and I are big Arby's fans, so after hearing about the contest, I was really excited to start filming," said Walsh in the Arby's release. "I'm a digital media production major, so this opportunity was perfect for me."
