Man gets long prison term for trying to kill federal agent
Wednesday, August 20, 2008

A Youngstown, Ohio, man yesterday was sentenced to 271/2 years in federal prison for trying to kill an agent during an undercover drug deal last year.

William "Jack" Amos, 23, was convicted in May in U.S. District Court in Cleveland of charges of attempting to kill a federal agent, assault on a federal agent, using a firearm in a crime of violence and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Mr. Amos was convicted of a 2004 burglary.

Last July, Mr. Amos carried a .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol when he met an agent of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Youngstown for the drug deal.

Mr. Amos fled after the shooting, but he turned himself in early the next day.

"Amos forfeited his freedom and his youth when he pulled the trigger and attempted to murder a federal agent," said ATF Special Agent Christopher P. Sadowski.

The agent involved was not identified by the U.S. attorney's office in Ohio, and his condition after the shooting has not been updated.
