A Jeannette man was sentenced to 13 months in prison today for stealing 23 guns from a Delmont sports shop in January.
Justin Carroll still faces additional time in Kansas, where he fled when he was released on bond in the federal case.
Mr. Carroll was charged with using a baseball bat to smash the front window of Delmont Sport Shop on Jan. 7 and stealing 23 guns, along with an antique firearm from a glass display case.
Murrysville police, who reported several other break-ins that night, were able to connect New Balance shoes Mr. Carroll was wearing when they interviewed him to shoe prints left at the gun shop.
Mr. Carroll was released on bond but fled to Geary County, Kan. There he was arrested on a number of counts, including aggravated assault, leaving the scene of an accident, felony theft, possession of stolen property, burglary, fleeing and eluding and reckless driving.
Federal public defender Jay Finkelstein said his client has cooperated with investigators in the case.
"He confessed right away," Mr. Finkelstein said. "He's done everything he can to go on the road to making this right."
But Senior U.S. District Judge Gustave Diamond added: "On the other hand, when he was released on bail, he absconded and went out and committed another crime."
The government recommended Mr. Carroll, who pleaded guilty to one count of stealing firearms from a federally licensed dealer, receive a prison term within the 12 to 18 month guideline range, saying that Mr. Carroll needs treatment for alcohol and drug abuse.
In addition to the prison term, Judge Diamond ordered Mr. Carroll to serve the maximum term of three years supervised release and pay nearly $2,000 in restitution.
