Flight 93 temporary memorial forced to move
Wednesday, July 23, 2008

Work to relocate the Flight 93 temporary memorial across the street continues this week and should be completed by mid-August.

The agreement that the National Park Service had with the private landowner of the former temporary site would have expired in September, said Joanne Hanley, the superintendant of the memorial. However, Svonavec Inc. decided to terminate the agreement early.

"The National Park Service does not operate public programs on private lands -- nor does the National Park Service expend money on private lands -- without an agreement," Ms. Hanley said. "We can't do business on a handshake."

So, the temporary memorial in Stonycreek Township is moving to the other side of Skyline Road, to property owned by the Families of Flight 93.

"We have the same mission," Ms. Hanley said, noting that it is to provide the public with a dignified, solemn and respectful experience.

Crews have already put up new chain link fencing, where visitors leave tributes to the 40 people who died when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a nearby field on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. Some larger items at the memorial, like the shelter and other monuments, have already been moved. A new parking lot and pad for the memorial are almost completed, except for putting down additional materials -- like gravel -- and having it compacted.

"It's going very, very well," Ms. Hanley said.

Items left on the old fence at the temporary site have been removed and are being stored nearby. They will be put on the new fence on Monday.

"We take this very seriously," Ms. Hanley said. "We've been entrusted by the American people to take care of these tributes in perpetuity."
