NHL Notebook: Penguins re-sign Taffe, 2 minor leaguers
Tuesday, July 22, 2008

The Penguins re-signed forward Jeff Taffe yesterday, along with two players who spent most of last season in the team's minor league system.

Taffe, who signed a one-year contract, debuted with the Penguins in December in a game against the Boston Bruins. In 45 games after he was called up from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL, Taffe had five goals and seven assists.

Taffe, a native of Hastings, Minn., originally was chosen by the St. Louis Blues in the 2000 NHL draft.

In 145 career games with the Penguins, the Phoenix Coyotes and the New York Rangers, Taffe has had 20 goals and 20 assists.

The Penguins also re-signed forward Jonathan Filewich to a two-year contract. He played five games with the Penguins last season, but spent most of the season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, where he had 10 goals and 21 assists in 71 games.

Defenseman Paul Bissonnette signed a one-year contract. He split time between Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and the ECHL Wheeling Nailiers.

Flyers

Forward Joffrey Lupul and Philadelphia agreed to a four-year extension, keeping him with the Eastern Conference finalists through the 2012-13 season.

Lupul had 20 goals and 46 points in 56 regular-season games for the Flyers last season, and had 10 points in 17 playoff games. He missed 26 games with a sprained ankle and a concussion.

Lupul has 77 goals and 84 assists for 161 points and 156 penalty minutes in 293 regular-season games. He was acquired in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers a year ago.

Devils

Russian center Fedor Fedorov was signed by New Jersey after he spent the past two seasons playing in Europe. Fedorov, 27, had 12 goals and 14 assists in 49 games last season with Dynamo in Russia. His previous stint in the NHL came in the 2005-06 season when he played three games with the New York Rangers.

Fedorov also played in 15 games with the Vancouver Canucks in the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons. He spent three seasons in the Canucks' organization, playing in 116 contests for Manitoba of the AHL.

Internationally, Fedorov -- the younger brother of Washington Capitals star Sergei Fedorov -- represented Russia at the 2005 World Championships.

Red Wings

Detroit re-signed goaltender Jimmy Howard and defenseman Jonathan Ericsson to three-year contracts.

Howard will earn $600,000 next season and Ericsson $550,000. Howard played four games for the Red Wings last season. Goaltender Dominik Hasek retired after the season, Chris Osgood will be back in net, and former Penguins goaltender Ty Conklin was signed July 1 to a one-year deal.
