Skate, bike and blade events at improved Millvale skate park
Sunday, July 20, 2008

Pittsburgh's amateur skateboarders, stunt bikers and inline skaters have a shot at going toe to toe -- make that wheel to wheel -- against hot pros at the third annual Smalls Summer Xtravaganza.

The two day spectacle July 25-26 is at Mr. Smalls SkatePark in Millvale on a newly redesigned course. Owner Mike Speranzo, a former semi-pro skater and musician who also owns Mr. Smalls Theater, said about 80 percent of the 80-by-130-foot course has been retooled and the entire street course has been elevated. The course includes manual boxes, ledges, banks and a pro-caliber launch box.

Friday's qualifier rounds will be open to the public, giving anyone a chance to compete with Rollerblade pros -- including Mike Johnson, Rachard Johnson, the Kelso brothers and Frankie Morales -- at Saturday's skateboarding, BMX and inline pro/am contests.

"That's the way it happens in our industry," said Chris Edwards, a Rollerblade legend and industry innovator who was recently hired as special event planner at the skate park. "Someone out of nowhere can be the next champion."

Edwards said the revamped Mr. Smalls has become "a great course."

"It's up to par. We geared it to a pro level, but it's still fun for amateur kids," he said. "We already have big sponsors; we're trying to get this event on the map with some of the other big events in Rollerblading. We're hoping to add more indoor features [to the park] and start developing the culture here to give kids the support they deserve."

Mr. Smalls SkatePark is in Millvale's Riverfront Park under the 40th Street Bridge, about three blocks from Mr. Smalls Theatre. Pre-register for the Friday qualifier rounds at www.creativelifesupport.com. More details are at www.mrsmalls.com.
