Stylebook: Leonardo DiCaprio put on watch for his charity
Monday, July 14, 2008

It's a collaboration of titanic proportion. A-list actor Leonardo DiCaprio is teaming up with Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre to raise money for his charity and to celebrate the luxury brand's 175th anniversary.

Environmental programs associated with The Leonardo DiCaprio Fund at the California Community Foundation will benefit from proceeds from the sale this fall of two super-expensive watches, the first in two limited series of watches to feature new technology.

The Master Compressor Extreme Lab style, worn by Mr. DiCaprio to the premiere of his documentary "The 11th Hour," is valued at $300,000. It's crafted in carbon fibers and titanium; features an automatic tourbillon, two time zones and Mr. DiCaprio's engraved signature; is resistant to temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees and as high as 60 degrees Celsius; and features the first mechanical movement to operate without lubricant.

The other style, a platinum edition of the Reverso Gyrotourbillon 2, is valued at $400,000. It features the first spherical tourbillon, a 50-hour power reserve, a cylindrical balance-spring with end curves and more than 370 other parts.

The timepieces will be sold at Jaeger-LeCoultre Boutiques, scheduled to open in Beverly Hills, Calif., this fall and Boca Raton, Fla., later this summer.
